They stare at the equipment price, pick the cheapest quote, and forget the concrete foundation, the electrician, the installer and the load test. A USD 3,800 crane becomes an USD 8,000 project fast. What Drives Jib Crane Equipment Cost?

Jib crane pricing is simpler than overhead crane pricing. There are fewer variables. The main drivers are capacity, jib radius and hoist type. Mounting style (pillar vs wall) matters too, but less than you would think.

Capacity is the biggest price driver. A 2-ton jib crane costs roughly 3x what a 0.25-ton unit costs. The column, boom and rotation bearing all scale up with load — heavier steel, bigger bearing, stronger slewing ring.

Jib radius affects the cantilever beam weight. A 6 m radius needs about 70% more beam steel than a 3 m radius for the same capacity. Every extra meter of radius adds roughly USD 300–700 to the boom cost depending on capacity.

Hoist type — chain hoist is standard up to 5 tons. A manual chain block costs the least. An electric chain hoist adds USD 400–1,200. A wire rope hoist adds USD 800–2,500 and is needed only when the lift height exceeds 6 m or when the hoist runs at A5+ duty.

What Does Jib Crane Installation Actually Cost?

The installation cost breaks into four parts: foundation or wall mounting, crane assembly and positioning, electrical work, and commissioning. Each one can surprise you if you have not budgeted for it.

Concrete foundation (pillar-mounted): A 1-ton pillar-mounted jib crane needs a reinforced concrete block roughly 1.2 x 1.2 x 1.0 m. Pouring it costs USD 400–1,000 depending on concrete mix, rebar, and labor rates. For a 3-ton unit, the foundation grows to 1.5 x 1.5 x 1.2 m and costs USD 700–1,600. The foundation must cure for 7–14 days before the crane can be bolted down — this is often the longest wait in the installation timeline.

Wall brackets (wall-mounted): Steel wall brackets cost USD 200–600 depending on capacity and jib radius. The bigger cost is the structural engineer's wall assessment: USD 300–600. About 20% of installations need wall reinforcement — steel backing plates, additional bracing, or epoxy anchor bolts — which adds USD 400–1,500. If the wall is a thin brick veneer or curtain wall, wall-mounted is not an option.

Crane assembly and positioning: The crane arrives in two or three pieces — column, boom, and sometimes the slewing unit separately. Assembly and crane placement cost USD 500–1,200. A small 0.25-ton unit can be assembled by two technicians in half a day. A 5-ton unit needs a small mobile crane for the boom lift, adding USD 400–800 to this line item.

Electrical work: Wiring the hoist, control panel, limit switches and power disconnect runs USD 300–1,000. A manual chain block has no electrical work. An electric hoist with pendant control needs a local disconnect switch and cable from the panel. An electric hoist with remote control needs a receiver mounted on the boom, which adds about USD 200–400 in wiring.

Commissioning and load testing: USD 300–800. Covers the 125% overload test, rotation bearing check, limit switch calibration, brake adjustment and operator handover. This is mandatory for CE certification compliance.

What catches buyers off guard most often: the timeline. The concrete foundation needs 7–14 days to cure before you can bolt the crane down. Order the crane and pour the foundation on the same day? You are waiting two weeks for curing, then one day for installation. Total from order to first lift: 3–5 weeks for a standard jib crane. Wall-mounted skips the curing wait — typically 2–3 weeks from order to first lift.

Another thing: the cost breakdown above assumes a ground-floor installation with easy access. If your workshop is on a mezzanine, add 30–50% to the installation labor because the crane boom has to be hoisted up with rigging gear rather than positioned by forklift.

What Does Jib Crane Maintenance Cost Over 10 Years?

Jib cranes are simple machines with few moving parts. The rotation bearing and the hoist are the only wear items that matter. That keeps maintenance costs low relative to the purchase price.

For a 5-ton unit running A5 duty, the 10-year maintenance total climbs to about USD 6,000–9,000 because the wire rope hoist and larger rotation bearing cost more to service.

Here is a tip: the cheapest maintenance you can do is greasing the rotation bearing quarterly. Costs about USD 10 in grease per year. I have inspected ten-year-old jib cranes that were never greased — the bearing race was ground down to bare metal, requiring a full crane teardown at USD 1,500–2,500. A USD 10/year grease schedule would have prevented it completely.

How Energy Costs Compare

Jib cranes draw very little power. A 1-ton electric chain hoist pulls about 1.5 kW during lifting and nearly nothing during idle. The rotation mechanism is hand-operated on most jib cranes — no motor for rotation.

Real numbers: a 1-ton jib crane running 4 hours a day, 260 days a year, lifting about 25% of the time, consumes roughly 1,500–2,000 kWh annually. At USD 0.12/kWh industrial rate, that is USD 180–240 per year. A 5-ton wire rope unit running the same schedule consumes about 3,500–4,500 kWh per year — USD 420–540.

Energy is the smallest cost component in a jib crane's TCO. It accounts for roughly 7–10% of the 10-year total. For comparison, maintenance is 15–25% and the initial purchase + installation is 65–75%.

The one energy-related choice that matters: VFD control on the hoist. VFD adds about USD 600–1,200 to the hoist price but cuts hoist energy consumption by 20–30% through regenerative braking and soft start. More importantly, VFD reduces mechanical shock on the hoist gears and brake — extending the brake pad and gearbox life by 30–50%. The payback from reduced brake maintenance is about 3–5 years. For a heavy-duty A5 application, VFD pays for itself faster than that.

10-Year Total Cost of Ownership: Pillar-Mounted vs Wall-Mounted vs Multiple Workstations

Here is the most common question I get from buyers: should I buy one pillar-mounted jib crane, one wall-mounted, or several small jib cranes for different workstations? The TCO answer depends on how many workstations you need to cover and whether you have a strong wall.

Some buyers consider a small single-girder bridge crane instead of a jib crane, thinking the bridge crane offers more flexibility. It does — but it costs more.

The jib crane is about 64% cheaper in 10-year TCO. The bridge crane covers the full bay width — reach any point east-west and north-south. If you genuinely need that coverage, the bridge crane is worth the premium. If you only need to lift at one or two fixed points, the jib crane is the clear financial winner.

Key insight: For a single workstation, a jib crane is 3–4x cheaper than any overhead bridge crane in 10-year TCO. The breakeven shifts only when you need to cover 4+ workstations or need full bay coverage across the entire workshop floor.

How to Budget for a Jib Crane Project

Here is the budget framework I use with buyers:

  1. Crane equipment: 40–50% of total project cost. Get quotes from 2–3 CE-certified manufacturers
  2. Foundation or wall brackets: 8–15% of total. Decide on pillar vs wall before quoting — changing your mind later means starting the budget from zero
  3. Installation + electrical + commissioning: 25–35% of total. Factor in rigging equipment if the installation is on a mezzanine
  4. Contingency (reinforcement, permits, freight): 5–10% of total. Freight from China to Europe or the Middle East adds USD 500–1,500 depending on the crane weight

For a 0.5-ton pillar-mounted jib crane with 4 m radius, budget USD 5,000–6,500 total installed. For 1 ton with 5 m radius, budget USD 6,500–8,500. For 2 tons with 6 m radius, budget USD 9,000–12,000. For 5 tons with 7 m radius (wire rope hoist), budget USD 13,000–17,000. These numbers assume a standard ground-floor concrete slab with no major surprises.

New vs Used Jib Crane: Does It Make Sense?

Used jib cranes come up for sale frequently — more than any other crane type — because companies relocate or reorganize workshops and leave the jib behind. A used 1-ton pillar-mounted jib crane in decent condition sells for USD 1,200–2,500.

After a structural inspection, hoist service, new chain or wire rope, electrical check and re-certification, the total cost reaches USD 3,500–5,500 — about 50–70% of a new installed unit. The refurbished crane gives you 8–12 years of remaining life. A new unit gives 20–25 years.

The catch with used jib cranes: the column height is fixed. If the previous owner's ceiling was 5 m and your workshop ceiling is 6 m, the crane works fine — just use the extra clearance. But if their ceiling was 6 m and yours is 4.5 m, the column will not fit without cutting and re-welding, which voids the structural certification and costs about USD 600–1,000. Measure your clearance height before bidding on a used jib crane.

Another thing: used jib cranes almost never include the foundation bolts or base plate layout. You will need to drill the existing column base to match your new foundation anchors, or order new anchor bolts to match the column. Either way, budget an extra USD 100–300 for the foundation interface.
