European overhead crane standards are going through the biggest update in a decade. The draft prEN 15011:2025 — it will replace the current EN 15011:2020 for bridge and gantry cranes — is now in CEN/TC 147 review. Meanwhile the EU Machinery Regulation 2023/1230 kicks in on 20 January 2027. No transition period. For anyone buying, specifying, or manufacturing European-standard cranes, this is not some distant hypothetical. These changes will affect what gets delivered, how it gets certified, and who can sell to European buyers after early next year.

prEN 15011:2025 — What Changes for Bridge and Gantry Cranes

The prEN 15011:2025 draft covers bridge and gantry cranes — single girder, double girder, and gantry types up to any capacity. It replaces EN 15011:2020 and introduces updated requirements across several areas that matter for day-to-day crane purchasing decisions.

The biggest practical change is in fatigue design. The new draft tightens proof-of-competence requirements for hoist mechanisms under cyclic loading. Take a standard double girder crane running two shifts in a steel fabrication yard — FEM duty class A6 or above. The gearbox and drum assemblies now need to pass more stringent fatigue calculations. The rated capacity stays the same, but the design margin changes. So does the service life of the hoist mechanism.

Wind load calculations for outdoor gantry cranes are also updated. The draft pulls in newer meteorological data for European regions and introduces more granular wind speed zones. For a 20-ton gantry crane operating in a Northern European port, the wind load safety factor may go up compared to the 2020 version. That means some gantry crane foundations and rail systems specified under the old standard may need rechecking if the installation sits in a higher-wind region.

EN 13001-3-6:2026 — New Standard for Hydraulic Cylinders in Cranes

Published in early 2026, EN 13001-3-6 applies the limit state method to hydraulic cylinders used in cranes. This covers rod buckling resistance, piston seal integrity under pressure cycling, cylinder mounting bracket verification, and weld quality at pressure boundaries.

For gantry cranes with hydraulic lifting systems, jib cranes with boom articulation, and any overhead crane installation using hydraulic actuation for auxiliary functions like clamp rotation or spreader adjustment, this standard provides the first dedicated design verification framework under the EN 13001 series. It is expected to be harmonized under the new Machinery Regulation before the January 2027 deadline.

European-standard cranes are used worldwide — not because European regulations apply globally, but because many international EPC contractors specify CE, FEM, and ISO standards in their tender documents.
